Browsing today's Internet when neither your OS nor potentially your browser are receiving security updates is a very dangerous undertaking. And lastly, XP itself hasn't been getting security updates for quite some time now, with the notable exception of a patch for WannaCry that Microsoft released, so even if "everything works", it doesn't mean everything is safe. They want users on Edge, but that's not available on XP.
Chrome and IE have dropped support for XP entirely, and actually Microsoft actively discourages using IE, even the newer versions available on newer versions of Windows, citing security concerns. The only partial exception is Firefox since it's still getting security updates on XP, but it's not getting feature updates anymore, so as Web standards evolve, even it may stop working correctly. I didn't test actually doing anything with it, but hopefully that's some measure of reassurance on top of Macrium's own system requirements.Īnd finally off-topic, just to put this on your radar in case you're unaware, even if everything works today, that may not be the case for much longer because browsers are no longer getting support on XP.
However, just in case you decide to upgrade, I dug up an XP VM I keep around for running an application that allows me to tinker with BMWs, and I can confirm that Reflect 7.1 installs and launches on XP SP3. I guess V7 would get you extended support given that V6 support will be ending in February, since that will be a year after V7 launched, but other than that it's unclear to me what V7 would offer you while you're on XP. The other major features of V7 are viBoot and now Macrium Image Guardian, but those aren't available on XP either viBoot requires at least Win8 (Pro or better, not Home), and MIG requires at least Win7. Other than that, the only new behavior I remember that might affect performance is that V7 performs a one-time test of a disk using direct disk I/O and then file system buffering to see which is faster, and then uses that mode with that disk going forward - but V6 supports both methods too, so you could run that test manually and then stick with whatever is fastest anyway.
The speed improvement of V7 is related to CBT, but that only applies if you capture multiple backups within a given Windows session and are using Differential or Incremental backups.and CBT isn't available on XP it requires at least Vista.
